Procedure

Intrathecal Implant Infusion Device

An intrathecal implant infusion device (pain pump) delivers pain medication directly to the fluid surrounding the spinal cord. Because the medication is delivered directly to the source of pain signals, much smaller doses are needed compared to oral medications, resulting in fewer systemic side effects. The device consists of a small pump implanted under the skin of the abdomen and a thin catheter that delivers medication to the intrathecal space around the spinal cord. The pump is programmable and can be adjusted by your physician to optimize pain relief. A trial period is typically performed before permanent implantation to ensure the therapy is effective for each patient.
